The November Road Trip

Posted by on Nov 11, 2011 in Musings

I had to travel to Calgary last week to participate in my mothers move into her new nursing home/care facility. Luckily I had changed over to winter tires about a week before I got the call that a room had been found for her.

I have driven the route from Calgary to Vancouver and back and forth and forth and back more times than I can count. The 11 hour straight drive through is beginning to be a bit too much for me these days, but I still enjoy the scenery.

I left Vancouver about 6:30 in the morning and was in Banff around 4 PM so I stopped by the popular lookout above Vermilion Lakes to grab a shot of Mount Rundle. The lake was almost completely frozen over. I was hoping the snow would go away when I got closer to Calgary but it didn’t. At least there wasn’t as much on the ground there as there was around Golden and Lake Louise.

Spent three days in Calgary, saw mother’s new digs and visited with family for a day or two before heading back to Vancouver. The return trip was a bit uglier than the drive to Calgary. A bit more snow and I was surprised to see snow on the ground around Sicamous. Normally this time of year there would be snow around Revelstoke but not as far west as Sicamous, but what do I know because I don’t drive that highway much between November and April.

Just before one comes into Three Valley Gap there is a small lake between the CP Rail tracks and the highway. Stopped there to snap this picture so I would remind myself not to travel to Calgary again when its cold and miserable. I can handle the rain on the coast, but at least the grass is green all year round and if we do get some of the white stuff, it disappears pretty fast. Those words will probably come to haunt me this winter.
