The Inukshuk

Early Saturday morning Sue and I took a long walk with Zoey and took a different direction from our normal route, heading south to a part of English Bay we always drive by, but seldom walk around. In the park area there is an Inukshuk, erected a few years ago. If you want to know what an Inukshuk is click the link to learn more. This is located a few hundred yards south of the beach area at English Bay across the street from the Sylvia Hotel where hordes of sun worshippers plant themselves on the sand during the summer. The beach is pretty...

Lions Gate Bridge at twilight

Lions Gate Bridge at twilight

Every once in while we drive through Stanley Park at Dusk just to see the lights in the inner harbour. About halfway through the drive you end up crossing the overpass that goes over the Stanley Park Causeway leading up to the Lions Gate Bridge. I’ve gone over this countless times in daylight, not so much at night. Normally we are crossing the bridge at night coming back from North or West Vancouver and we end up under the overpass heading back to the city, so unless we drive all the way around the park, we don’t get this...

A Sunday Morning Walk

Since I injured my ankle a few weeks ago and added yet another fall to my gimped knee, Zoe and I have not had the opportunity to go for too many walks down towards Lost Lagoon, one of our favourite spots close to home. The last two or three days the pain in the ankle has lessened so I can now walk about 6 blocks without feeling a lot of discomfort. Since we moved to Vancouver I have walked down this block, just before you come to the tennis courts, countless times and it seems to have a special kind of light in the morning and I have always...

Pixicle Puppy

I have changed the website where I am displaying some of my photographs. My travel pictures and our family stuff is still here at “lookylou” but other pictures have moved to Pixicle Puppy, a site I set up for displaying my urges for photographic creativity. You will note there is no longer “SmugMug” in the navigation bar. The link to the site is in the “links” shown on the blog...

Zoe Cooling Down

Zoe Cooling Down

Running true to form, ol Da took a tumble a few weeks ago, landing on an already gimped knee and adding to that condition, a sprained ankle. Needless to say this happened while working on mother’s house and being of not sound mind I did nothing to speed the healing process like icing my ankle. So I waited until I got back to Vancouver and decided after hobbling around when I walked more than 10 feet, maybe I should do something about this. My routine became that of a couch potato, lay on the couch, eat, drink and remain immobile for long...

Big Wood Dozer

I had Sue drop me off by Science World in False Creek so I could walk around the South side of the inlet. I was trying to get some pictures of the new dome under construction at BC place. I was looking for pictures of the frame before they put the fabric on the roof. Shortly after I started my walk I came across this fabulous wooden sculpture that was put up after the end of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.  Here is an excerpt about the piece from an article by Katherine Monk in the Vancouver Sun, August 7th 2010. The full story can be...

The old grocery store

The old grocery store

The west end district of Vancouver is filled with a lot of old buildings and houses. Unlike modern suburbs you find little shops in the middle of densely populated areas, surrounded by high rise apartment buildings, lo-rise apartments, old houses converted into multi-unit residences and the occasional restored heritage house which typically is also a multi-unit residence. This is a little corner store kitty corner from the Barclay Heritage centre at the corner of Nicola and Barclay. Like most small corner stores you can buy fresh fruits and...

The Sylvia

Anyone who has visited Vancouver and strolled around English Bay has no doubt seen this very cool, old hotel called The Sylvia. It’s located right across the street from the most popular part of the English Bay  on Beach Avenue. As you can tell from this composite of 4 images, the building is covered in vines. I took the pictures for this composition yesterday when Zoe and I were out for one of our afternoon strolls. I was trying to get a picture of the hotel earlier in the year before the leaves started filling in the wall....

Dog memory

On Wednesday afternoon, a few hours before the Vancouver Riot started after the Canucks loss to the Boston Bruins in the final game for the Stanley Cup, Sue and I took Zoe for a walk around the neighbourhood. We went walking over by our old Condo on Comox Street. We were curious to see if Zoe would remember her old building so we decided to walk by it to see what would happen. We didn’t say a word as we approached the building and as soon as we got to the walkway to the main entrance, Zoe just peeled off and headed for the doorway. We...
